Papillon 1 (Miwa Ueda)
Del Rey Manga
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Rating: Teen
Price: $10.95
Papillon is the story of a girl, Ageha, who is a high school outcast. But this story has a twist: Ageha has a twin sister, Hana, who happens to be the most popular girl in school.
There is another interesting twist to the tale. When they were born, their parents were not able to care for both of them, so Hana stayed with their parents in the city while Ageha was sent to the country to stay with their grandmother.
The differences in their upbringings attribute a lot toward their respective dispositions: Hana as the girl who has all the boys fawning and Ageha as the girl who works in a shop and wearing glasses. Their personalities differ, too. Ageha has such a down-on-her-luck feel while Hana is quite outgoing.
Coincidentally, in Ageha’s high school there is a boy she has a crush on. And he happened to be someone she grew up with. However, he doesn’t know it’s the girl he grew up with because Ageha has never told him.
And after she turns him down to go listen to a concert, he takes her co-worker instead. While she’s cleaning up, a man stops in and tells her that she needs to look at a photo of the boy and tell herself that they will be together. In other words, she needs to believe in herself instead of wallow in her pool of self-pity.
While Ageha slowly learns to build more confidence in herself, she asks Ryusei to accompany her to the hospital to visit her grandmother. From there, Ageha gets upset at some questionable behavior by those around her.
That leads to a failure in her self-confidence and fits of jealousy. At school, she finds that she is teased once incriminating evidence turns up. Her classmates laughing at her continues her erosion of self-confidence.
With the help of others, Ageha slowly cleans up her image. But as that happens, she suffers a crucial blow to her happiness.

Summing Up:
Although there are some cliched elements, overall, it's a fun first volume.
