Metro Survive Volume 2 (Yuki Fujisawa)
DR Masters
Age Rating: 15+
Genre: Drama
Price: $9.95
A glimpse of hope comes to the survivors as they are joined together with another party that was stranded in the upper basement. However, their relief is short-lived as they see no signs of rescue and the shortage of food creeps up on them. Frustration ensues. After a hostile takeover by the other party's leader, Mishima and his party are threatened to leave the basement back to the Metro. How long will they be able to survive in the rodent-infested Metro?
Volume one of this title ended with our heroes back in the Metro station with no food, no water, and seemingly no hope. But, like any roller coaster in full swing, there are a lot of ups and downs for our heroes before they make it back to the station.
With the earthquake having done it's damage, it's now up to the human element to create the obstacles for heroes to overcome. And what better villains than a pair of night club hosts who can switch from suave to psycho in the blink of an eye? They are vicious and violent, using people and having them disposed as soon as they cease being useful. Mishima's more peaceful and co-operative group are no match for their ruthlessness, and are finally overcome.
Mishima's group however, has a greater strength. Resourcefulness. We watch again and again, as by skill or luck they find a way out of each harrowing situation. They manage to hold off Ryuya and his thugs for three days with a bluff, and escape the deadly fire Ryuya and Mashi set for them with a ruse. And in the end, it is Mishima's quick thinking that saves them all.
Again, the tension was palatable, as we are left wondering how Mishima's group will get through each cliff hanger that ends several chapters. It gets especially thick towards the end, as it appears that the villains will get away. But, they do get their just desserts in the end. Our heroes get some rewards too, through redemption, revelation and reunion. It was a very satisfying ending to a heart pounding story.
Metro Survive as a whole makes for a great story. While the plot may seem formulaic, the characters and their interactions with each other more than makes up for it. The realistic reactions of the characters to their situation makes it easy to relate to them and sympathize with them. I really enjoyed this title I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good, pulse pounding drama.
