MPD-Psycho Volume 6 (Eiji Otsuka and Sho-u Tajima)

Dark Horse

MPD-Psycho Volume

At this sixth volume opens our "hero" Amamiya/Nishizono has disappeared for several months since the close of hyper-violent Volume 5.

Miwa Isono, Det. Machi Isono's little sister wakes up in the hospital after having a sty checked out (hint hint!). She runs into the Barney Fife of the Metropolitan Police Department, Det. Sasayama and what follows is a suspicious of a tale of psycho stalking Det. Isono. His M.O. is to blow up everyone who has ever done anything negative against Isono. So how does he react when she points out that stalking her is pretty annoying?

We see several familiar faces we haven't seen in a while, and a good memory (or just the footnotes in the back) will be needed to to connect all the dots in Volume 6.

Tajima's artwork continues to stun and although many of the characters maintain a overall coolness that makes the state of violence that more disturbing, I liked how Sasayama got some nearly SD renditions in his reaction shots in this issue.

(Sasayama becomes a major character in Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, but as a retired detective, so what happened to him, and why he has a big scar across his face builds in me every issue as a reader. Clearly Kurosagi is set after the MPD Psycho...but what happened?!?)

MPD-Psycho is a 12-volume series with a guaranteed run by Dark Horse. The first three issues required a lot from the reader, but the roller coaster reached the highest peak for those with the patience to ride there, and the last three issues have opened up like rib cages during autopsies. Faithful readers have been happily awarded as we reach the half-way point in the series, but it isn't too late to jump on board.

You will never see another series like this and if psychopathy on multiple scales and murder  from a front-row seat don't bother you, then you are probably already reading MPD-Psycho.

Summing Up:

Amamiya has gone missing, but that doesn't put an end to the mayhem...if anything it encourages it. Another amazing volume feeds the story and builds on the intensity of this brutally addictive series.
