The team is still dealing with some of the consequences of the showdown in the Waterworks headquarters. As Randel Oland and Lt. Alice Malvin talk, they gain each other’s trust, and it sets the stage for the growth of the team.
The Sterling Wheel leadership and Waterworks members meet up, but in the middle of the unfolding events, State Section I, Claymore One, attacks and murders anyone on site. Malvin and her team, although they do not have jurisdiction, interrupt and bring some much-needed exercise to the team members.
Oland grapples with his humanity in an effort to save Hans, who he has some connection to. But sometimes the most well-intentioned plans do not come to fruition.
In the middle of the volume, a story involving Sgt. Maj. Stecchin helped to flesh out her character, which was nice. Although she’s not an integral character in the series, it was nice to get to feel more connected to other State Section III members. To top it off, the end of that story brings an unexpected twist.
In the remainder of the volume, Malvin takes center stage as her character gets a turn to show her other sides.
This volume of Pumpkin Scissors really helped to give more meaning and life to the characters. In addition, introducing State Section I was a good way to give the main characters at least a short-term antithesis.
