High School Girls Volume 9 (Towa Ohshima)

DR Masters

High School Girls Volume

Age Rating: Mature
Genre: Comedy
Price: $9.99

Hi everyone.  Odagiri here!  it's not easy being a cute single male teacher at an all girls high school.  For Christ's sake, when are they going to learn that I'm not a poser?!  I'm just an ordinary teacher trying to get some respect from my students...Here my side of the story as the school trip to Okinawa finally concludes as well as part one of High School Girls!

I had low expectations for this book, especially based on the back cover text.  I was surprised by what I actually got.  I was expecting to be offended by fan service and lots of unnecessary nudity.  Instead of being offended, I actually liked what I read.

This final volume picks up with the girls on the second day of their school trip to Okinawa.  There is some teacher harassment at the beginning, but the majority of the volume is for the girls' stories.  They reminisce about Junior High, past school trips, and talk about things only girls could; the physical changes a girl goes through from Junior High to High School.  Breast sizes and bras, first periods and body hair are things all girls have to go through.  I sure these discussions are funny to guys because they don't have to deal with them.  I found myself nodding, and thinking "true...Yes!  I so know how that feels!" with several chapters.  So, all the nudity that was shown in these parts didn't bother me.  It didn't feel like fan service.

This series is still a comedy, and with all comedies, there were some hit and miss chapters.  But on the whole, there were more hits than misses.  You don't really need to be familiar with the characters to get the jokes, but I'm sure they are funnier if you do.  The 4-koma and mini scenes were funniest to me.  The jokes were quick and hit their target every time.

The art is nice, but it's not anything that stands out.  What really makes the comedy in this volume work is that the mangaka never resorts to using chibis or impossible to make expressions.  Everything is kept realistic, which is what this style of manga needs.  And there's even a serious moment at the end, as the trip is coming to an end.  It's hard to let good times end, but there will always be the memories of them to cherish.

High School Girls is a genuine comedy for an adult audience.  Even without the nudity, the humor is found in everyday things and situations, which is what the best comedians use for their material, and it really is funny.  If you're an older reader that doesn't want blood and guts or serious thought in their manga, definitely check this title out.

Summing Up:

Growing up through the eyes of High School Girls has never been so funny...or true!
